François Laviolette

Professor François Laviolette is the founding director of the Big Data Research Centre (BDRC) at Université Laval, which brings together more than 50 researchers from five faculties working on different fundamental and applied aspects of data science. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, more specifically Machine Learning. He is a leader in PAC-Bayesian theory, a branch of learning theory that improves our understanding of existing automatic learning algorithms, and also allows new ones to be designed. Professor Laviolette also has strong expertise in bioinformatics. In this field, he has worked on interpretable artificial intelligence that can reveal new knowledge, providing information on how decisions are made. Part of his work is to extend the interpretable AI to other areas, including the insurance industry. In this regard, he was recently awarded a research chair in machine learning.
